The Periodontal Screening and Recording System (PSR) can be used to screen for LJP in adolescents. It was developed by the American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) to save time in screening for periodontal disease without compromising detection.25

  • PSR requires probing of every tooth surface, but only one score (between 0-3) is recorded in each sextant. A special probe is used with three colored segments for ease of scoring. If the score of 3 or higher is in two sextants, then a complete periodontal examination and charting is performed.

  • If no scores warrant further charting and recording, stickers like those shown here can be used to legally document that a full mouth probing was performed. (This system is used in some practices, but few schools use it because students need practice with comprehensive exams and periodontal charting to develop proficiency.)
