What is the Cost of Attending the DDS Program at the USC School of Dentistry?

Your USC budget, or estimated cost of attendance, is calculated based on the information you provide on the USC Supplemental Financial Aid Form for Graduate and Professional Students.  Your enrollment status, housing arrangements, and academic program are used to establish your budget.  The budget consists of tuition, fees, equipment/books, room and board, transportation, and personal/miscellaneous expenses.

For your reference, below are 2007-2008 budgets for DDS students:

Items 1st Year 2nd Year 3rd Year 4th Year
Tuition $61,953.00 $61,953.00 $61,953.00 $41,302.00
Fees $2,253.00 $1,993.00 $1,993.00 $1,758.00
IMS/Equipment $8,593.00 $6,273.00 $4,721.00 $2,660.00

Total $95,467.00 $92,887.00 $91,335.00 $62,721.00

The above budgets reflect costs of room & board for those students renting non-university owned housing.  Students living with parents or relatives will have a lower room & board allowance.

What Cost are Considered?

The estimated cost of attendance (COA) is an estimate of a student's educational expenses for a specific period of enrollment.  The amount of financial aid a student may receive cannot exceed the estimated cost of attendanceFinancial aid provides assistance to the student in meeting his/her financial obligations directly related (i.e., tuition, fees, equipment, books and supplies) to his/her matriculation at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry.  Financial aid may also be applied towards the student's indirect educational costs (i.e., housing, transportation, and personal/miscellaneous expenses).  The USCSD Office of Financial Aid will determine the allowance for indirect educational costs with the philosophy that a student may receive financial aid to meet his/her educational costs that are considered reasonable for a student.  Financial aid programs are not intended to maintain a life style nor is it intended to fund spouse and/or dependent expenses, mortgages, credit card debts, or others items not included in the above table.  You must identify outside resources that will assist you in defraying those expenses not allowed by financial aid.

How is Financial Need Determined?

Financial need is the difference between the cost of attending the USC School of Dentistry and the amount you and your family, if applicable, can contribute to your education, as determined by USC.  The university uses the Federal Need Analysis Methodology to determine the Expected Family Contribution (EFC).  This methodology takes into consideration the following factors:

  • Adjusted Gross Income
  • Federal and state taxes
  • Untaxed income and benefits
  • The number of family members in the household
  • The number of family members in post-secondary education

This and additional information is captured on the FAFSA.  Once we have received all required documents, reviewed those documents, you will receive a Statement of Financial Aid Eligibility.  The Statement is used to communicate to you your eligibility.
