How is Financial Need Determined?

Financial "need" is the difference between the cost of attending USC and the amount you and your family are expected to contribute to your education, as determined by USC. If you meet all eligibility requirements and deadlines, we will offer you a combination of funds from federal, state and university financial aid grant, loan and work programs, sufficient to meet your full USC determined financial need.

Your family contribution (the amount you and your family are expected to contribute to your educational costs) is calculated by the Financial Aid Office from the information you supply when you apply for financial aid.

Student & Parent Financing Programs

There are several programs available to help cover all or part of the family’s expected contribution.

When planning for an investment like a college education, the financial needs of families vary greatly. Some families prefer to draw from their future earnings by paying over an extended period. Others prefer to minimize costs by paying in larger, single sums from their income and current assets. Most families choose a combination. To meet these varying needs, USC offers a short-term monthly payment plan and participates in a variety of long-term programs.

Keep in mind that the total amount of assistance received from all sources (scholarships, financial aid, non-university awards and financing programs) cannot exceed the total estimated cost of attendance.
