MLA Dental Section Booklist – 2002/2003

(amended April, 2009)

This web site contains the revised, final core list of book and journal titles recommended for acquisition by the Dental Section of the Medical Library Association (MLA) for support of clinical dentistry. The list is an update of the Dental Section’s “A basic list of recommended books and journals for support of clinical dentistry in a nondental library” (Bull Med Libr Assoc 1997;85(3):233-38). A committee of the Dental Section developed this list. Committee members are Frank Mason, chair, John Glueckert, and Luis Gonzalez. In April 2009 the contents of this list were updated with most recent identifiable editions by Annie Hughes, Univ of Southern California.

The booklist includes 179 book titles (divided into 32 subjects) and 86 journals. When available, the web site or page for each dental journal is provided. As of April 2009 not all book titles on the list are available for purchase (or for free for a couple of titles).

PLEASE NOTE THE LIST IS AVAILABLE IN HTML (below), a pdf version for printing the lists of books or journals, and, comma-delimited or CSV format for inserting into spreadsheets.

Every effort was made to provide accurate and current information about each book and journal title including ISSN or ISBN, publisher, pricing, as well as edition and copyright year. MLA Dental Section Booklist for a Library Supporting a Dental Program or Dental Service

Following are book and journal titles recommended by dental librarians for a core resource dental collection. This core collection is to support the information and research needs of the oral health care provider (student and practitioner). This collection can be a part of a larger health sciences library or a part of a separate dental library, or, housed in a hospital or departmental library.

The selection criteria are:

· Current English-language title still in-print and available

· Established, authoritative author(s) and publisher

· Meets the information and/or research needs on the subject for the oral health care provider (student and practitioner)

· May have been used as a recommended or required textbook for the subject in a teaching environment in the US and/or Canada (recommended criterion but not required)

· Title is available electronically on CD/DVD or on the Internet/WWW through the publisher or other provider (recommended criterion but not required)

An asterisk (*) before a title is a recommended first purchase title.
