USC Faculty Honored at ADEA Annual Session

Charles Shuler, D.M.D., Ph.D., and Jane Forrest, R.D.H., Ed.D., were among educators honored during the opening session of the American Dental Education Association's Annual Meeting in San Diego on March 3.

Charles Shuler, the George and Mary Lou Boone Professor of Craniofacial Molecular Biology, received the 2002 ADEA/GlaxoSmithKline Atridox® Excellence in Teaching Award. This award recognized his commitment to teaching excellence and his leadership in implementing the problem-based learning program at the USC School of Dentistry.

"He is very dedicated and extremely committed to his students and engages them in active learning to assist them in becoming critical thinkers. He has truly made an indelible mark on my approach to learning," said William Chen, a member of the doctoral dental Class of 2002.

Shuler, a member of the school's faculty since 1989, currently serves as the associate dean for student life and academic affairs as well as director of the Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology and the school's graduate program in craniofacial biology.

Jane Forrest received the 2002-2003 ADEA/Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals Allied Dental Educator's Fellowship. Awarded annually, this Fellowship promotes the development of leaders in allied dentistry and provides funding for three months at the ADEA Center for Educational Policy and Research in Washington, D.C. Forrest plans to work with ADEA staff in developing educational policy on distant learning and in defining dental schools' role in addressing access to oral health care and reducing oral health disparities.

"I'm interested in working on educational policy at the national level, which really broadens your perspective beyond dentistry and allows you to take account of what is happening in higher education as a whole. This experience will provide an opportunity to look at what works and what has been successful in other professions," said Forrest,
associate professor of clinical dentistry and director of the National Center for Dental Hygiene Research.
