NAVAZESH IN THE NEWS

Mahvash Navazesh, chair of the division of diagnostic sciences, has been the focus of a flurry of media attention in recent weeks. Appearing in print, on the radio and in a recent television broadcast, Navazesh has gained notoriety as an expert on the impact of saliva, or lack thereof, on one’s oral and overall health. While some might be hesitant to be known as a “spit authority,” she has relished the opportunity to share her expertise. “I am very happy to have this opportunity to raise awareness and hopefully help people who suffer from dry mouth and its complications,” said Navazesh.

The increased attention on Navazesh’s work stems in large part from a recent article in the Los Angeles Times entitled “The Wonders of Saliva.” The piece featured her, faculty member Paul Denny and several other prominent experts expounding on the infrequently discussed subject of salivary health and research. The insightful and informative article obviously captured the attention of readers, as Navazesh’s phone hasn’t stopped ringing since its publication. “I’ve had a lot of phone calls and emails. Many patients have called me and, to my surprise, quite a few physicians,” said Navazesh.

In the month following the Times piece, Navazesh has appeared on both radio and television, not only here in the United States, but in Iran and Europe as well. On the February 8 broadcast of CU@USC, a nightly, half-hour television broadcast produced for Trojan Vision Television, Navazesh expanded upon her statements in the Times and also discussed measures to alleviate salivary gland deficiencies and prevent breakdown in the oral cavity. Her radio interview on KIRN (670 AM), a local Iranian station, was also used for a television report that was broadcast in her native Iran and on Persian stations throughout Europe.
