Harold W. Hodson, a respected member of the removable prosthodontic faculty, died January 24.  A native of California, Hodson earned his bachelor’s, master’s in zoology and dental degrees at USC.

After completing his D.D.S. in 1954, he joined the United States Navy Dental Corps. While in the Navy, he completed a dental internship at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Corona, California and completed a general postgraduate course at the Naval Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland. He retired after 25 years of service with the rank of captain.

Hodson returned to USC in 1979 and taught clinical prosthodontics three days a week. He was a clinical associate professor of restorative dentistry when he retired in 1996.

During his 17-year teaching career at USC, he was known for being supportive of students and willing to help them solve clinical problems.  He was very well liked by his students and faculty colleagues.

John G. Sundbye II, a member of the dental school faculty for 23 years, died February 11.  He served four years in the United States Navy as a dental technician before attending Pasadena City College for his predental education. He earned his dental degree from USC in 1960 and taught part-time for a year as a clinical instructor following graduation.

Sundbye, known to his friends and colleagues as Jack, returned to the part-time faculty in 1974 and rose to the rank of clinical professor.  He practiced dentistry in San Marino for 28 years before taking a full-time position of professor of clinical dentistry and assistant dean for patient care in 1988.  The following year, Sundbye was named the G. Donald and Marian James Montgomery Professor.

A popular clinical teacher, Sundbye was sought after by dental students eager to learn from his considerable expertise.  His availability to students working in the clinic and his willingness to demonstrate procedures contributed to his popularity.  His teaching abilities were recognized by students with the Excellence in Teaching Award in 1989.

Sundbye left his position as assistant dean for patient care in 1990 to establish the school’s first intramural faculty practice as assistant dean for faculty practice.  Three years later, he was named the Rex Ingraham Professor and chairman of the Department of Restorative Dentistry.

In addition to his contributions in an administrative capacity and in the education of students, Sundbye was a loyal alumnus.  He was a life member of USC Alumni Association, Dentistry Associates and the Dental Alumni Association for which he served as a board member and officer.

Sundbye was a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and the American College of Dentists, a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon and Alpha Tau Epsilon honorary fraternities, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

He retired in 1996 and was living in La Crescenta at the time of his death.  He is survived by his wife Dorothy and, sons John and Nelson.
