AYUDA - NICARAGUA 2006

slideshow photos by Michael Meru

The USC School of Dentistry once again teamed with AYUDA to bring oral health care to underserved children in Latin America, this time to a remote village in Nicaragua.  USCSD faculty and staff were joined on the trip by their counterparts from the Ohio State University School of Dentistry.

The group traveled to the province of Nuevo Segovia in northern Nicaragua and set up their clinic at the Centro Escolar Autonomo Monsenor Madrigal School.  They examined 400 children and performed over 900 procedures during their five-day clinic.

"The time that we spent in Nicaragua was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had," says Michael Meru, whose photos are featured in this slideshow.  “It is one thing to take the pain away from a person here, who has been suffering for a day or two, but to be able to help a person who has been suffering for months, that previously had no end to the misery in sight, is another.”
