Wireless Worries

While some people may joke that they are addicted to their Blackberry, the wireless handheld device that allows users to email, text and web browse, overuse may actually have bona fide health implications. Colette Nagami, OTR/L, USC alumnus and advisor to Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, a division of the USC School of Dentistry, says that she has seen a range of injuries stemming from Blackberry use, including neck and shoulder pain, tendonitis in the thumb and even forearm sprains. She advises that people need to be more vigilant with their use and not use Blackberries for more than three to five minutes at a time. In addition, “You should always stretch your neck and shoulders,” Nagami consults. “And rub your hands to improve circulation.”
