Norris Juniors Tennis Tournament
The Norris Juniors will be hosting a tennis tournament on June 8, 2002 at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. Players who participate will obtain pledges and all proceeds will benefit cancer research at the USC/Norris.
The Norris Juniors is a group of young professionals dedicated to raising
funds for the USC/Norris Cancer Center and educating and promoting awareness of the latest advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer.
Please contact Sondra Malatesta at (323) 865-0700 or by email at malatesta_s@ccnt.hsc.usc.edu for further details on this event or Norris Juniors membership.

San Pedro Peninsula Cancer Guild *
On November 18, 2001 members of the San Pedro Peninsula Cancer Guild and their guests attended their annual fundraising event and luncheon, "An Affaire to Remember" at the Long Beach Hyatt Hotel. More than 800 guests enjoyed a fashion show by the celebrated designer, "Lourdes." The event, chaired by Yvonne Bogdanovich, included a "Holiday Fair" where guests were able to purchase handcrafted gifts. According to Guild President Raylene Mellier, the event raised $83,000 to support gastrointestinal cancer research at the USC/Norris.

Satnicks Support USC/Norris *
"Good night, be well, happy dreams" has been a family motto for two generations in the Satnik house. When Joel Satnick became a patient at USC/Norris, his wife, Carole, spent several nights sleeping in a chair in his hospital room. After her experience, the Satniks purchased forty-one "sleeping chairs" so each patient room of the USC/Norris Hospital would have comfortable sleeping arrangements for overnight guests. Each chair will have an individual brass plaque bearing the Satnick name as well as the family motto.
The Satnicks have been so committed to the USC/Norris and supporting cancer research that in December they made an additional gift of $200,000 to benefit the renal cancer research program of David Quinn, M.D., Joel's medical oncologist. In addition to their generous gifts, Carole's parents, Rachel and Samuel Kobert endowed a cancer research laboratory in the Topping Tower.

A Gift from the Heart * HAS PHOTO
After a family friend died of lung cancer, Matthew Hoffman, a seventh grade student at Mayfield Junior School in Pasadena, asked his schoolmates for an unusual 13th birthday present. Instead of gifts for him, Hoffman requested friends to donate $5 to the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, where the friend was treated, to help fund cancer research. He soon raised $318 to purchase micropippettes, which will be used in experiments with cow DNA in lung cancer research in the lab of Ite Laird-Offringa, Ph.D., assistant professor of surgery and biochemistry.
Laird-Offringa, pictured center, demonstrates for Hoffman and his mother, Debbie, how equipment is used during a tour of her lab.

Bequests and Wills *
The USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center was the recipient of $800,000 for cancer research from the estate of Ludmila Petran, and a bequest of $1,117,000 from the estate of Mary Slechta. These gifts support the future of cancer research by providing for the USC/Norris through the donor's will and estate plans.
A gift made through a will allows the designation of a person who will act as the executor to implement the wishes and directions stated in the will. An executor may be an individual or an institution, or a combination of both. A will is a customized estate plan that should incorporate tax-saving arrangements.
A will can include a charitable bequest for the USC/Norris to support specific research, a physician or equipment needs. A bequest can establish an endowment in your name to pay income to benefit the USC/Norris. Or a bequest can be an unrestricted gift allowing the USC/Norris to apply it to urgent needs that exist when the gift is received.
Your legacy can be a dollar amount, a specific asset, or a percentage of the remainder estate. An attorney can draft an appropriate bequest when you have a new will prepared, or a codicil may be added to your existing will.
For additional information about wills, bequests and other planned giving opportunities, please contact Carmy Peters at (323) 865-0700.

Hollanders Issue $25,000 Challenge Grant *

"The events that occurred on September 11th have affected the entire nation," says Jerry Hollander, a Cancer Research Associate (CRA) since 1995. "Helping New York is what all Americans must do. But, we must not forget our local charities in doing so. And more importantly, we must continue to support the USC/Norris, which has a proven track record as being at the forefront in the fight to eradicate cancer."
Understanding that donations to local charities have been impacted, Jerry and his wife, Sonny, decided to try to boost donations to USC/Norris by giving a challenge grant of $25,000 to CRA members and other friends of USC/Norris.
The Hollanders will match any gifts made to the CRA that exceeds the members' normal level of giving. If you have already given to USC/Norris this year, the Hollanders are asking that you stretch and give a little more. If you have not yet given, they are asking that you give more than you have in the past.
Cancer Research Associates (CRA) exists to provide seed money crucial for developing projects that can lead to future treatments at USC/Norris. CRA funds also help to expand current research and explore new research leads.
To date, the Hollander match has exceeded $21,000 and CRA members have contributed more than $100,000 to support cancer research. If you would like to make a CRA contribution, join CRA or discuss corporate opportunities for CRA membership please contact Paul Hosch at (323) 865-0700.

First Annual Cancer Recognition Day *
USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center has designated Monday, March 25, 2002 as Cancer Recognition Day. Friends of USC/Norris may celebrate the life of a survivor who has been touched by cancer, or honor the memory of loved ones who have lost their battle with cancer.
To participate, please check the box "Cancer Recognition Day" on the envelope in this magazine and designate your honoree. Gifts of $50 or more will place the honoree's name on a plaque at the base of a "giving tree". For additional information, please contact Paul Hosch at (323) 865-0700.

Fiesta of the Spanish Horse
The Fiesta of the Spanish Horse weekend will be May 3-5 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank. The Spanish Breeds Horse Show takes place each day beginning at 9 a.m. At 6:30 p.m., May 4, entertainment to celebrate the heritage of the Spanish Horse will feature breeds such as Andalusian, Paso Fino and Peruvian Paso, along with roping, drill teams, Latin and Mariachi bands, dancers and food.
All proceeds from this popular event benefit the USC/Norris. For additional information, please contact Sondra Malatesta at (323) 865-0700 or malatesta_s@ccnt.hsc.usc.edu, or visit www.fiestaspanishhorse.com.

Angels West *
With Irene and Milt Golden as the driving force, Angels West, a non-profit group of volunteers, started with seven couples in 1967 with the common goal of raising funds for cancer research and hospital care. Since then they have grown to include 200 members. In 1992, they directed their support to USC/Norris and have raised more than $2 million dollars for the research and treatment of cancer.
The Angel West funds are provided through sales of entertainment books, See's Candies, memorial or tribute gifts and other year-round activities. In February, members attended a Valentine's Day luncheon, and in March saw the Palm Springs Follies.
Angels West is looking for new members to combine social fun and successful fundraising for cancer research at the USC/Norris. Members have the opportunity to visit USC/Norris, meet the researchers and doctors, hear about research and progress and make a difference. This summer, tickets for the Laguna Pageant of the Masters will be available through Angels West for the August 18 performance.
For additional information about Angels West, please contact co-presidents Irene or Milt Golden at (818) 785-6653 or visit the Web site at www.angelswestcancerresearch.org.

Receptions
The USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center will be hosting a variety of small, intimate receptions throughout 2002. These evening events will be hosted in homes of friends of the USC/Norris in locations throughout Southern California, including Palm Springs, Emerald Bay, San Diego, and other communities. Doctors and researchers from the USC/Norris will meet with small groups of interested patients and donors to discuss topics of importance and relevance in cancer research. For more information about attending or hosting an event, please contact Sondra Malatesta in the Norris Development office at (323) 865-0700 or malatesta_s@ccnt.hsc.usc.edu.
