Rehman Gift

Through her estate, USC alumna Thea Rehman bequeathed $456,000 to create the Thea Rehman Endowed Breast Cancer Research Fund.

Awarded a music scholarship on graduation from high school, Rehman attended USC, earning a dual bachelor of arts degree in music and English in 1967. In addition to her love for the arts, Rehman’s passion for education, travel and horses led her to explore many cities around the world and inspired her varied career paths. When diagnosed with breast cancer, Rehman decided to leave a lasting legacy to benefit breast cancer research at USC/Norris.

Keiper Planned Gift

USC alumnus Harry Keiper and his wife, Marion are longtime donors to USC/Norris and the university. Recently they made a planned gift and created a charitable remainder unitrust, which is being funded by two pieces of property valued at $237,979. Their gift will support research programs in the USC/Norris Department of Hematology and in the Keck School of Medicine departments of neurology, neurosurgery and ophthalmology.

The planned gift also will generate a life income and a charitable tax deduction for the Keipers. In 2000, they created a charitable remainder unitrust to establish the Marion and Harold Keiper Endowed Chair, which provides funds to recruit new scientists to USC/Norris.

Match for Melanoma Research

An anonymous donor will match all gifts in support of the melanoma research program of Jeffrey Weber, M.D., Ph.D., the Lucy and Berle Adams Chair in Cancer Research, Keck School of Medicine associate professor of medicine and microbiology and chief of oncology. The match has raised more than $61,447, resulting in a total of $86,447 in funds for the program. nPerkins Foundation Grant

The Jean Perkins Foundation supports the “Great Petey Open” with a $50,000 grant. The grant is the first for the newly formed foundation under the direction of president Jaime Carroll.

More than 120 golfers participated in the third annual “Great Petey Open” at Aliso Viejo Golf Club to benefit the research of Ebrahim Zandi, Ph.D., Keck School of Medicine assistant professor of molecular microbiology and immunology. The open is in memory of Peter Leimbach, who lost his battle with cancer in 1999. Committee members Mike Crowell, Tom Roche, and David Brandt, along with friends and family orchestrated the event, which raised more than $87,800.

The Leimbach family was presented with a large glass plaque recognizing the generosity of their family and friends. The plaque will be placed in Zandi’s laboratory.

USC/Norris Auxiliary Endowment

Begun in 1987 by USC Trustee Lorna Reed, the Norris Auxiliary has grown from 25 to almost 200 members today.

The Auxiliary members volunteer in patient care and services at USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and Hospital and at special events. In addition, they generously support USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center through fundraising.

In 1997, the members established the USC/Norris Auxiliary Endowment. Since 1999, the proceeds from the Endowment have established grants in excess of $200,000 for USC/Norris clinical research benefiting patients.

Swing Against Cancer

The 3rd Annual Swing Against Cancer Golf Tournament raised more than $100,000 for cancer research at USC/Norris.

Before teeing off for a day of golf at El Caballero Country Club, more than 100 golfers and volunteers enjoyed a barbecue lunch catered by Quincy’s, courtesy of Jerry and Sonny Hollander. Following the tournament were a reception featuring the USC Trojan Marching Band, dinner and a live auction.

This year’s tournament included two $15,000 tournament sponsors, the Glen and Mary Ann Charles Family Foundation and the Joseph B. Gould Foundation. In addition, the Norman and Elise Swanton Family Foundation and USC/Norris Cancer Hospital made substantial contributions at the $10,000 Club Level Sponsorships.

These unrestricted funds contribute to a variety of research at USC/Norris. nFor information about the many ways to support the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, contact the USC/Norris Development Office at (323) 865-0700 or visit online at http://uscnorriscancer.usc.edu.
