The Women's Health Initiative was the largest and most expensive
study ever conducted to evaluate the effect of hormone replacement
therapy on disease. This multi-center study enrolled participants
between 1993 and 1998. The combination estrogen/progrestin arm
was closed in July 2002 after 5.2 years of study. The interpretation
of this data as well as medical advice was widely distributed
in the lay media on July 7, 2002. Drs. Brinton and Arias will
discuss both the effect of Women's Health Initiative on menopausal
women as well as research on healthy aging.
