The tender touching of patients is one of the few non-sexual demonstrations of warmth in our society. Meanwhile, the patient who had been shot bolted up and had to be restrained. Another resident was taking venous blood gas samples. The bed had been lowered to ease the patient's breathing and many nurses and students worked on him; the nasogastric suction bottle was being emptied. They didn't know if the patient would make it.
