Bust of Joseph P. Widney
Donor: Emil Seletz

“When I was a resident at the Los Angeles General Hospital, Dr. Harold Witherbee, a gracious physician, told me about Dr. Joseph Widney.  Dr. Widney, a surgeon during the Civil War, was then 96 years old.  He had founded the Los Angeles County Medical Association in 1871.  In 1885, he founded the Medical School of the University of Southern California, and he and his brother, Judge Widney, were among the co-founders of the University.  Dr. Witherbee and members of the County Medical asked me to do a sculpture of Dr. Widney… Dr. Widney was a cultured gentleman, educated, and a literary man.”
