NCBI Field Guide Workshop

Sponsored by USC Norris Medical Library and the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute

National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) instructors Dr. Peter Cooper and Simin Assadi will present "A Field Guide to GenBank and NCBI Molecular Biology Resources" at the USC Health Sciences Campus. The field guide provides a comprehensive overview on major NCBI databases and software tools, including GenBank, RefSeq, ENTREZ, BLAST, Cn3D, Map Viewer, genomes, etc. Spanning two days, it will consist of a lecture (3 hours, single session) and a hands-on workshop (2 hours, multiple sessions).

Major Topics Covered

GenBank database: description and scope
NCBI derivative database: RefSeqs
Database searching using ENTREZ, Neighboring and Links
NCBI structures resources: the Molecular Modeling Database (MMDB) Structural Alignments/visualization tools VAST and Cn3D, etc.
Similarity searching using NCBI BLAST, PSI-BLAST, RPS-BLAST
NCBI genomic resources:
- Complete microbial genomes in ENTREZ
- Higher genome resources, including UniGene, UniSTS, dbSNP, Map Viewer, the Human, Mouse and Rat genomes, etc.
