Key Resources for Clinicians

  • OvidSP - Ovid’s version of MEDLINE links to full-text of articles in journals to which USC subscribes. Ovid contains databases other than MEDLINE as well.

  • PubMed@USC - A version of MEDLINE modified so that USC users may link to full-text of articles from journals to which USC subscribes.

  • Pubget.com  –  Another version of PubMed which emphasizes simple searching (at the expense of precision and thoroughness) and easy access to full-text of articles.

  • Web of Knowledge – If MEDLINE fails this cross-disciplinary database searches journals not covered in MEDLINE. Special features include Impact Factor information and citation searching.

  • Gideon Infectious disease database

  • Journal Watch - General Medicine Summaries and practical interpretation of the most recent and most important research; all from the perspective of practicing physicians.

Single Books

Book Collections

  • AccessMedicine -  Full-text of  ~60 textbooks including Harrison’s, Adam’s Neurology, Goodman and Gilman, Schwartz’s Surgery.

  • MDConsult – Full text of ~50 textbooks. Also includes Clinics of North America series

  • Stat!Ref – Full text of ~85 textbooks from a variety of biomedical fields.

Not finding what you seek?  HELIX is USC’s Biomedical Library Catalog and includes books and journals in print and electronic format. TIP: Use the drop down menu to set your search to the right kind of information. Are you looking for an Author, a Title, a Journal Title, or a Subject. Keyword displays a list of items containing your typed word(s). Browse displays an alphabetical list starting with your typed words.

  • Cancer.gov/PDQ - National Cancer Institute website. The Physician's Data Query (PDQ) section is a very useful source of cancer diagnosis and treatmentinformation for clinicians and patients.

  • MMWR - weekly summary of morbidity and mortality in the United States

  • Faculty of 1000 Medicine - Provides a consensus view of important articles and trends across medicine. You can create an account, identify subjects of interest to you and have important new articles emailed to you. This resource has the potential to save time in your attempts to keep up with the medical literature.

  • Google Scholar - Google with filters that limit results to scholarly websites. Set Scholar Preferences (to right of search box) so that  Library Links includes “University of Southern California”. Now you will see Find It@USC links to full-text of articles.

  • Scirus.com - Search engine that looks through scientific websites.

  • Traveler's health information from CDC

  • WHO International Travel Health - World Health Organization's biannual publication on international travel and health.

  • Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) – A wealth of clinical information. The Clinical Information link leads to Preventive Services information. The Data and Surveys link leads to hard-to-find health care expenditure information.
