Mail is the default e-mail client that is distributed with versions of Mac OS X. While not as fully featured as other traditional e-mail clients, Mail provides all the functionality necessary to check your e-mail.
Mail allows for both IMAP and POP connections. The instructions provided here detail using Mail with an account set for IMAP.
