Unix

Unix was developed as a research project at AT&T Bell Labs in 1969. In 1976, it was made available to universities for free and then became a for profit operating system over time. In 1977, a group at Berkeley licensed the code from AT&T and developed their own version called the Berkeley Software Distribution or BSD Unix. BSD UNIX is "freely available" and perhaps the most widely known. In addition to BSD UNIX, several other software companies have developed their versions of UNIX. The majority of UNIX systems at USC use Sun MicroSystems' Solaris operating system.
