Using SAS on USC User Room Macintoshes

With the advent of Mac OS X, SAS for Macintosh has presented some problems that have led us at ITS to offer SAS Under UNIX as an alternative. SAS for Macintosh 6.12 must run under Classic (Mac OS 9), and not all features of the package seem to work correctly; moreover, development of SAS for Macintosh has been frozen by SAS Institute at Release 6.12, with no announced plans to provide more recent versions on that platform.

Since access to UNIX from the Public User Area Macintosh machines is very straightforward, and all USC students staff and faculty have UNIX accounts, we have decided to remove the old SAS for Macintosh software and provide instructions on how to access the current UNIX version of SAS from the User Room Macs.

The basic procedure is to open an X-Window session from OS X then invoke SAS at the UNIX prompt in that session.
