Software Request Form (Instructional Labs / General Use Rooms)

Background

The following outlines key aspects of the process for requesting new or upgraded software to be installed in ITS managed rooms and labs. More detailed information can be found by visiting our website at: http://www.usc.edu/its/policies/procedures
(See information in Section 7 Software Acquisition)

Please note these very important aspects of this process:

  • Licenses should not be purchased until after ITS has had an opportunity to evaluate the software in the instructional lab environment.

  • For software that is required by a specific date (such as the first day of a class), the acquisition request must be received a minimum of 60 days prior to the first day that the software will be used. New or upgraded software will not be installed once a semester has started. NOTE: Even with the 60 day lead-time requirement, ITS does NOT guarantee all software can or will be installed for use in a networked computing environment.

  • Unless other arrangements have been made in advance, software is removed from ITS servers at the end of each Spring Semester.

Prior to requesting software to be installed, please keep the following in mind:

  • Do NOT purchase the software until ITS has determined that the software is compatible with the lab environment.

  • Currently, the PCs are running the XP operating system and the Macs are running OS 10.

  • ITS cannot support many types of client/server applications (i.e. Microsoft SQL Server, Filemaker Pro 5.x, Oracle database, calendar systems, etc.).

  • USC infrastructure and policy cannot support the use of USB or parallel port dongles (hardware locks) and beta software in our managed desktop and systems environment.

  • All software to be installed in the labs must be fully supported by the vendor.

Note: The first hour of software installation is free. Additional installation time will be assessed at $125/hr. with a two-hour minimum charge. Within 5 days of receiving the request, ITS will contact the requester advising if their request will exceed the first free hour and provide an estimate of the hours required. A typical installation can take 3 or more hours depending upon the complexity and size of software package and time to create an installation that can exist in our security conscious environment. If a request is not completed within the estimated time, work will stop until authorization to resume is received from the department. Submission of this form to ITS indicates that you understand that any authorized hourly charges are due ITS whether or not software installation is successfully performed.

Once you submit the form, several tests are done on the information provided. If there is a problem, you'll be taken to a new page with an explanation and the form filled out as you last submitted it for easy editing. This may take up to 2 or 3 minutes.

You can inform ITS of any changes that occur in the future by sending mail to its-software@usc.edu.
