Setting Up ITS Unmanaged Backup Services for Servers
This page provides IT administrators with information about setting up ITS Unmanaged Backup accounts.
The ITS Unmanaged Backup Service provides departments with a location and allocates storage space to back up data for their Solaris, Linux, or other UNIX-based servers. Departments will need to use the Network File System (NFS) protocol to connect.
The unmanaged backup service is for UNIX-based operating systems and requires you to back up your own data. ITS does not provide backup software for this service.
Requesting an Unmanaged Backup Account
To request an Unmanaged Backup Services account for UNIX-based operating systems such as Solaris or Linux, please fill out and submit an ITS Backup Service Request form.
Once you have submitted the form, ITS will configure your Unmanaged Backup Service and inform you of the server and directory name of your new backup location.
For example, the School of Pharmacy might receive: ei-md2:/export/samfs-dumps/dept/pharmacy
Next, you will need to mount this directory on your department’s server in order to access the backup storage. The NFS (Network File System) protocol is accessible from many UNIX-based operating systems, but specific commands differ from platform to platform. On a typical UNIX-based operating system, you will need to create a directory such as /backups, and then mount the supplied directory using a command such as:
mount ei-md2:/export/samfs-dumps/dept/pharmacy /backups
The client host can then write backup sets into that area using the local directory name: e.g. /backups/MyDisk.full.A
Because there is a quota on space consumption and the number of files, ITS recommends that you create large backups in order to fully utilize your allocated space. These quotas allow for an average file size of 100 MB.
NOTE: ITS will export your file system from both ei-md1 & ei-md2. You can mount from either host; when one host is down the other is typically available. There is no failover of services.
