Setting Apple Mail to Filter Messages Tagged as Spam

This document provides instructions for setting Apple's Mail program to automatically filter messages tagged as spam by Brightmail AntiSpam software. You have the option of sending tagged messages to a specific folder for review or of automatically deleting messages tagged as spam.

Mail Client Configuration

To filter mail tagged by Brightmail as spam, perform the following procedure:

  1. Launch Mail.
  2. From the Mail menu, select Preferences.
  3. Click the Rules icon.
  4. Click the Add Rule button. The Rules window will appear.
  5. In the Description field, provide a name for this filter (e.g., Brightmail or Spam).

  6. Select the filter option to execute if any of the following conditions are met.
  7. For the first condition, select Subject from the first menu.
  8. In the following menu, select contains.
  9. In the following text field, enter << SPAM? >>.
  10. If you would like to move the message to a particular folder, select Move Message in the Perform the following actions section, and select the appropriate folder (e.g., JunkMail, Spam, or Bulk.
  11. If you would like to delete the message instead, select Delete Message in the Perform the following actions section.
  12. Click OK .
  13. Verify that the newly created filter's Active option is checked.

  14. Close the Rules window.

Getting Help

The ITS Customer Support Center can assist you with setting up filters for your mail. However, consultants will not extensively troubleshoot filter rules, nor can they assist users who need finer rules than common ones.
