Setting Pine to Filter Messages Tagged as Spam
This document provides instructions for setting Pine to automatically filter messages tagged as spam by Brightmail AntiSpam software. You have the option of sending tagged messages to a specific folder for review or of automatically deleting messages tagged as spam.
Pine Mail Client Configuration
To filter Brightmail tagged messages utilizing the << SPAM? >> Subject line tag, follow these steps:
- From the Pine main menu, type s to access the Setup menu
- From the Setup menu, type r to access Rules. Type f for Filters
- Type a to add a new filter.
- At the top of the menu, type c to give the filter a name such as Brightmail or Spam
- Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, navigate to the section titled Subject Pattern and type c. In the space provide below, type "<< SPAM? >>"
- Navigate to the section Current Folder Type and select Specific with the "*" symbol. The folder list is = INBOX.
- Navigate to the Filter Action section. To move email tagged as spam to a folder, select to Folder, type c and provide the appropriate folder name (e.g., JunkMail, Spam, Bulk). To delete tagged messages automatically, select Delete and type "*".
- Type e to exit the Add Filtering Rules menu and y to confirm the changes.
- Type e to exit the Setup Filtering Rules menu and y to confirm the changes.
To filter messages tagged by Brightmail utilizing the x-uscspam:spam? x-header tag, follow these steps:
- From the Pine main menu, type s to access the Setup menu.
- From the Setup menu, type r to access Rules. Type f for Filters.
- Type a to add a new filter.
- At the top of the menu, type c to give the filter a name such as Brightmail or Spam.
- To add the x-header pattern, type o followed by x and name the header field x-uscspam.
- To add the x-header filter, type c followed by spam?.
- Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, navigate to the section called Current Folder Type and select Specific with the "*" symbol. The folder list is = INBOX.
- Navigate to the section Filter Action. To move email tagged as spam to a folder, select to Folder, type c, and provide the appropriate folder name (e.g., JunkMail, Spam, Bulk). To delete tagged messages automatically, select Delete and type "*".
- Type e to exit the Add Filtering Rules menu and y to confirm the changes.
- Type e to exit the Setup Filtering Rules menu and y to confirm the changes.
Getting Help
The ITS Customer Support Center can assist you with setting up filters for your mail. However, consultants will not extensively troubleshoot filter rules, nor can they assist users who need finer rules than common ones.
