Setting Thunderbird 2.x to Filter Messages Tagged as Spam

This document provides instructions for setting the Thunderbird email program to automatically filter messages tagged as spam by Brightmail AntiSpam software. You have the option of sending tagged messages to a specific folder for review or of automatically deleting messages tagged as spam.

Thunderbird Mail Client Configuration

To filter mail tagged by Brightmail as spam, perform the following steps:

  1. Launch Thunderbird.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Message Filters.
  3. From the Filters for menu, select the email account that you will be applying this filter to.

  4. Click New.
  5. In the Filter Name box, enter a name for this filter (e.g., Brightmail or spam).

  6. Select the option Match any of the following.
  7. From the first menu, select Subject.
  8. From the next menu, select begins with.
  9. In the next text field, enter << SPAM? >>.
  10. If you would like to move the tagged messages to another folder, select Move to folder in the Perform these actions box. Select the appropriate folder.
  11. If you would like to delete the tagged messages, select Delete the message in the Perform these actions box.
  12. Click OK.
  13. In the Message Filters window, verify that your newly created filter is enabled, and click OK.

Getting Help

The ITS Customer Support Center can assist you in setting up filters for your mail. However, consultants will not extensively troubleshoot filter rules, nor can they assist users who need rules finer than the common ones.
