Setting USC Web Mail to Filter Messages Tagged as Spam

This document provides instructions for setting the USC Web Mail program to automatically filter messages tagged as spam by Brightmail AntiSpam software. You have the option of sending tagged messages to a specific folder for review or of automatically deleting messages tagged as spam.

Web Mail Client Configuration

To filter mail tagged by Brightmail as spam, perform the following steps:

  1. Log on to https://email.usc.edu.
  2. Click the Options tab.
  3. Click Mail Filters from the list of options on the left side of the page.
  4. In Mail Filters, click the New button. The New Mail Filter window will appear.

  6. In the Filter Name box, enter a name for the filter (e.g., Brightmail or Spam).
  7. Verify that Status is set to Enabled.
  8. In the For Incoming Messages section, you may use the default setting, Match any of the following conditions.
  9. In the Subject field, select contains and enter << SPAM? >> in the following text box.
  10. If you would like these tagged messages to be moved to a folder, check the option File message to folder.
  11. Select the folder that you would like these messages placed (e.g., Trash, JunkMail, or Spam).
  12. If you would like these tagged messages to be deleted, check the option Discard message.
  13. Click Save.

Getting Help

The ITS Customer Support Center can assist you in setting up filters for your mail. However, consultants will not extensively troubleshoot filter rules, nor can they assist users who need rules finer than common ones.
