Connecting to the Internet via Modem for Windows 2000
This document provides instructions on how to connect to the Internet via modem with Windows 2000.
Requirements
- IBM-compatible PC running Windows XP
- 14.4 Kbps or faster modem
- An ITS-managed, USC computer account (See Computer Accounts.)
- Your Windows 2000 CD-ROM
To Create a Dial-up Connection
- From the Start menu, click Programs, Accessories, and then Communications.
- Select Network and Dial-up Connections.
- If this is your first time using dial-up networking, the Network Connection Wizard displays automatically. If the Network Connection Wizard does not display automatically, double-click Make New Connection to start the Network Connection Wizard.
- Select the Dial-up to private network option, and then click Next.
- Type the appropriate modem number, based on your location, in the Phone number field. For a complete list of phone numbers, visit ITS's list of Modem Pool Numbers.
- Click Use dialing rules to type the area code.
- Click Next.
- From the Connection Availability window, select the Only for myself option, and then click Next.
- In the Type the name you want to use for this connection field, type in a unique name, such as USC PPP, and then click Finish.

To Configure your Connection
Now that you have created a Dial-up Networking icon, you must configure it to connect to USC.
- Double-click the USC PPP icon. The Connect USC PPP window displays.
- Click Properties.
- On the Networking tab, make sure PPP: Windows 95/98/NT 4/2000, Internet is selected, and then click Settings.
- In the PPP Settings window, verify that Enable LCP extensions and Enable Software Compression are both checked.
- Click OK.
- Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click Properties. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window displays.
- Verify that Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected.
- Click Advanced. The Advanced TCP/IP Settings window displays.
- Select the DNS tab.
- Select the Append these DNS suffixes (in order) option, and type usc.edu in the field below it.
- Click Add.
- In the same field, type hsc.usc.edu, and then click Add.
- In the DNS suffix for this connection field, type usc.edu.
- Verify that Register this connection's addresses in DNS and Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration are both checked.
- Click OK to close the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window.
- Click OK to close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
- Click OK to close the USC PPP Properties window and return to the Connect USC PPP window.
To Disable Call-Waiting
You can choose to disable call-waiting on your phone when you establish a connection. If you do not disable call-waiting, your connection may be interrupted if you receive a call when you are connected to the Internet.
- From the Connect USC PPP window, click Properties.
- From the General tab, select Use dialing rules, and then click Rules.
- Select My Location, and then click Edit.
- Click To disable call waiting, dial.
- Select the appropriate prefix from the list of prefixes. If you have SBC service, select: *70. If you are on-campus, select *40. If you have another telephone service provider and do not know the appropriate prefix, contact the service provider directly.
- Click OK to return to the USC PPP Properties window, and then click OK to return to the Connect USC PPP window.
To Establish a Connection
Once you have configured your network properties, you can make a connection to USC.
- Double-click USC PPP to open the Connect USC PPP window.
- Type your USC username in the User name field.
- Type your password in the Password field. If you want Windows to store your password, check Save Password.
- Click Dial to connect.
Once connected, a clock in the Windows task bar displays your elapsed connection time.
To Disconnect from the Modem Pool
- From the Network and Dial-up Connection window, double-click USC PPP.
- Click Disconnect.
Note: If your connection is idle for 15 minutes, the system will automatically disconnect you.
