Connecting to the Internet via Modem for Windows 2000

This document provides instructions on how to connect to the Internet via modem with Windows 2000.

Requirements

  • IBM-compatible PC running Windows XP
  • 14.4 Kbps or faster modem
  • An ITS-managed, USC computer account (See Computer Accounts.)
  • Your Windows 2000 CD-ROM

To Create a Dial-up Connection

  1. From the Start menu, click Programs, Accessories, and then Communications.
  2. Select Network and Dial-up Connections.
  3. If this is your first time using dial-up networking, the Network Connection Wizard displays automatically. If the Network Connection Wizard does not display automatically, double-click Make New Connection to start the Network Connection Wizard.
  4. Select the Dial-up to private network option, and then click Next.
  5. Type the appropriate modem number, based on your location, in the Phone number field. For a complete list of phone numbers, visit ITS's list of Modem Pool Numbers.

  7. Click Use dialing rules to type the area code.
  8. Click Next.
  9. From the Connection Availability window, select the Only for myself option, and then click Next.
  10. In the Type the name you want to use for this connection field, type in a unique name, such as USC PPP, and then click Finish.

To Configure your Connection

Now that you have created a Dial-up Networking icon, you must configure it to connect to USC.

  1. Double-click the USC PPP icon. The Connect USC PPP window displays.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. On the Networking tab, make sure PPP: Windows 95/98/NT 4/2000, Internet is selected, and then click Settings.
  4. In the PPP Settings window, verify that Enable LCP extensions and Enable Software Compression are both checked.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click Properties. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window displays.
  7. Verify that Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected.
  8. Click Advanced. The Advanced TCP/IP Settings window displays.

  9. Select the DNS tab.
  10. Select the Append these DNS suffixes (in order) option, and type usc.edu in the field below it.
  11. Click Add.
  12. In the same field, type hsc.usc.edu, and then click Add.
  13. In the DNS suffix for this connection field, type usc.edu.
  14. Verify that Register this connection's addresses in DNS and Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration are both checked.
  15. Click OK to close the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window.
  16. Click OK to close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
  17. Click OK to close the USC PPP Properties window and return to the Connect USC PPP window.

To Disable Call-Waiting

You can choose to disable call-waiting on your phone when you establish a connection. If you do not disable call-waiting, your connection may be interrupted if you receive a call when you are connected to the Internet.

  1. From the Connect USC PPP window, click Properties.
  2. From the General tab, select Use dialing rules, and then click Rules.
  3. Select My Location, and then click Edit.
  4. Click To disable call waiting, dial.
  5. Select the appropriate prefix from the list of prefixes. If you have SBC service, select: *70. If you are on-campus, select *40. If you have another telephone service provider and do not know the appropriate prefix, contact the service provider directly.
  6. Click OK to return to the USC PPP Properties window, and then click OK to return to the Connect USC PPP window.

To Establish a Connection

Once you have configured your network properties, you can make a connection to USC.

  1. Double-click USC PPP to open the Connect USC PPP window.
  2. Type your USC username in the User name field.
  3. Type your password in the Password field. If you want Windows to store your password, check Save Password.
  4. Click Dial to connect.

Once connected, a clock in the Windows task bar displays your elapsed connection time.

To Disconnect from the Modem Pool

  1. From the Network and Dial-up Connection window, double-click USC PPP.
  2. Click Disconnect.
  3. Note: If your connection is idle for 15 minutes, the system will automatically disconnect you.
