Connecting to the Internet via Modem for Windows Vista

This document provides instructions on how to connect to the Internet via Modem with Windows Vista.

Note: This documentation covers instructions specific to the retail edition of Windows Vista, Enterprise Edition. There may be changes between available versions of Windows Vista, and this document will address significant differences, if known.

Requirements

  • Computer running Windows Vista
  • 14.4 Kbps or faster modem
  • An ITS-managed, USC computer account (See Computer Accounts.)

System-Safe Note

During the configuration and use of a dial-up network connection, a User Account Control window may ask you to verify whether you want to proceed with a particular action. If this window displays as a result of following the instructions in this document, it is safe to click on the Continue button to proceed.

  1. From the Start menu, and click Connect To. The Connect to a network window displays.
  2. Select the Set up a connection or network option.
  3. You will be prompted to choose a connection option. Select Set up a dial-up connection, and then click Next.
  4. In the Dial-up phone number field, type the appropriate dial-up number based on your location. Dial-up numbers can be found at ITS's list of Modem Pool Numbers.

  7. Type your password in the Password field. If you want Windows to store your password, check Remember this password.
  8. Note: Although you can check Show characters to ensure you have entered the correct password, do not leave this box checked, as it will allow anyone with access to your computer to view your saved password.

  9. In the Connection name field, type a name for this connection, such as USC PPP. This name should be unique from the other dial-up connections you create.
  10. Click Connect to establish the dial-up connection.
  11. The first time Windows establishes the dial-up connection, you may be prompted to select a location for your PPP connection. Select the option that accurately describes your current location.
