News - Outlook Express |

Outlook Express is a multi-faceted program that allows access to e-mail accounts and newsgroups. The news reader component has an easy-to-use graphical interface that is quite similar to Outlook Express's e-mail system. This integrated system makes it easy to post messages to newsgroups.
What You Will Need
Outlook Express is part of the Internet Explorer package. If you do not have Internet Explorer, you can download it online from http://software.usc.edu.
In order to access the news server, you will need a connection to the USC Network. You can use Outlook Express from networked computers on campus or remotely using PPP or ResNet.
You will also need a UNIX Account on one of the ITS time-sharing facilities: SCF, RCF, or HSC. This is required in order for you to post messages to the newsgroups.
Accessing news.usc.edu Newsgroups
Open Outlook Express.
Select the menu and click on .

Select the News tab from the dialog to see what news services are currently set up in Outlook. Click near the upper, righthand corner of the dialog and select News.

Follow the wizard and input your name, e-mail address, and the NNTP server of choice. At USC you may use news.usc.edu.

After clicking , it may ask you whether you would like to download a list of newsgroups from this server.
If you choose , it will retrieve a listing from which you can choose which particular newsgroups you would like to subscribe to, or read messages from. In order to subscribe, simply highlight the name of the newsgroup in the listing and click . Click when you are done.
Now you will see a truncated list of the total available newsgroupsthe newsgroups you chose to subscribe toon the left frame of the main window. Simply double-click on them to read the messages.
To post a new message or reply to a particular message you may simply click the appropriate button on the toolbars located towards the top of the main window.
