Configuring SAN for Mac OS X

Storage Area Network (SAN) for Mac OS X brings greater reliability to data storage and file sharing. Below you'll find documentation on connecting to the SAN system for storage.

What You Will Need

Connecting to SAN

Before you can connect to SAN, you need to know two pieces of information, your SANDS login and password and the SANDS server your account exists on. There are twelve SANDS servers, named in the pattern sands*.usc.edu, where * is the volume number your data is stored on.

If you are unsure of which SANDS server contains your account, please contact the Customer Support Center.

Once you know your account information and the server you wish to connect to, follow these steps:

  • Under the Go menu, select Connect to Server. The Connect to Server dialog box will appear.

  • In the Address field, enter the SANDS Server your data is located on and click Connect. The Login dialog box will appear.

  • Note: SANDS addresses take the form of sands*.usc.edu, where * is the SANDS volume your data is stored on (i.e., 1-12).

  • Select the Volume your data is located on by highlighting it and click OK.

  • Note: You may see several other volumes listed. While you can mount these volumes, it isn't advised, as you will not have access to their contents.

Your remote SAN volume will mount to your computer and should be located on your desktop. Open the volume by double-clicking on it, and navigate through the nested folders to your home directory.

Note: By default, Mac OS X shows all remote and local volumes on the Desktop. If you've changed this default setting, remote and/or local volumes may appear only in the Computer directory of your Finder.
