The files are resident on the RCF account ~graddy. in a subdirectory called UNITREE. To see the files in this subdirectory, enter:

Each directory contains data from one survey. OSHPD identifies surveys with letters; this collection begins with 'f' (which begins in 1979). The files can contain data that may come from three different years, due to different reporting periods among hospitals. Data through 1990-92 (letter 'q') is in the form of SAS data sets. Data after 1992 (letter 'r' and following) and also some data from 1990-92 ('q') are in raw (ascii) format.

Up through the first half of 1992 an older version of the survey was used. From mid-1992 until the present, a revised survey has been used. The surveys are quite similar, allowing some time-series or other analysis over time, as most of the variables are the same. In the listing below, you can see that the 1992-93 survey section has files stored in two directories, which correspond to the two different surveys: original, used in the first half of this time period, and revised, used in the second half of this time period and thereafter.

Names of directories containing raw data have the word 'raw' implanted.

    SAS Data Sets. Within each directory containing SAS Data Sets are separate files associated with survey pages. All relevant files are named according to the following convention: hXXpYYZ.ssd01 The extension .ssd01 denotes that the files are SAS data sets (not transport files), and as such must be moved to UNIX disk before being used in an analysis. In the file names, the XX refers to the OSHPD sequence number for the study (and this will match the UniTree directory number); the YY refers to the survey page number; Z refers to the column designation if a page of the survey form contains more than one.

    For example, file h15p21b.ssd01 denotes data entered from page 21 of survey 15 (OSHPD also uses the letter 'o' to designate this survey), column b.

    ASCII Data files. Beginning in 1991, the files in this collection are available in ASCII (raw data) form. They may be read using SAS, SPSS, or other statistics package programs that can read in raw data. SAS and SPSS can make use of the data directly from UniTree, through the use of PIPEs. Other packages will require that you copy the data from UniTree to local UNIX disk for processing. See the SAS or SPSS documentation for information on using PIPEs to read UniTree-based data.

    The raw (ASCII) files are named using the original OSHPD conventions. For most files, the code has the form sh.hXX.pYYZ.ca For data in study 18 (letter r) that used the revised survey form (see below), the form would be sh.hrXX.pYYZ.ca, with the 'r' in 'hrXX' designating 'revised'. In the file names, the XX refers to the OSHPD sequence number for the study (and this will match the UniTree directory number); the YY refers to the survey page number; Z refers to the column designation if a page of the survey form contains more than one.

    For example, file sh.h19.p17a.ca denotes data entered from page 17 of survey 19 (OSHPD also uses the letter 's' to designate this survey), column a.

    NOTE on the ASCII files: The ASCII files in these directories seem to have a garbage character (^C) on a separate line after the end of the data. This will probably not affect the reading of the 'real' data, but it may cause your statistics software to issue warning messages. There is a technique for cleaning this up, explained in a document called "Telling a Stat Package to Ignore Garbage Data Lines", which is found in:

    Cautions:
    • In the ASCII (raw) data, each fiscal-year study may not include all data pertaining to that year. It is often the case that some information belonging to a particular year's study is posted to OSHPD data files for the subsequent year. Because of this, you may need to read the data from at least two years to get complete information for any particular study 'cycle'.
    • Since the survey varies somewhat from year to year, you may need a copy of the survey instrument and/or codebook for each survey year that you plan to use. These can be obtained directly from OSHPD.
