SPSS Version 16 for Mac OS X is now available from ITS

ITS is now distributing SPSS Version 16 for Mac OS X from the Customer Support Center (LVL Lower Commons, 213.740.5555). (Upgrades to even higher Release levels may be available through Patches available from the SPSS Web Site.)

Version 16 is certified and fully supported on Tiger (MacOS 10.4) as well as Leapord (MacOS 10.5).Spss 16 does work on Intel-based Macs. Please see www.spss.com/spss_mac/ for the SPSS Inc. page for details. Spss 16.x will work for for Mac OS 10.4 and up. For detail,,

check System requirement on SPSS Inc site. For latest patches and upgrades check this out. Login to support.spss.com

Since we may not have the CDs on hand at every moment, appointments are required for obtaining the SPSS software. Students who already have Graduate Packs for Version 15 or lower should contact SPSS Inc., as they may offer upgrades priced lower than the ITS regular price:

      http://www.usc.edu/its/doc/statistics/spss/faq/gradpacks.html

For users who have versions older than 16.x or are new purchasers of SPSS software from ITS, student Graduate Packs will be sold for $160, and faculty and staff may obtain their copies for $200 each. SPSS software does not require yearly renewals; instead new fees are charged for each new version level upgrade (e.g., 35.x to 16.x).

Problems with Version 11.x and 13.x, MacOS X.3

      • SPSS Inc. has not tested or certified 11.0.2 under MacOS X.3
      • 11.0.2 will not install on a G3 running a version of MacOS higher than X.2.4
      • SPSS Inc. unofficially notes that if 11.0.2 is newly installed (or reinstalled) after the installation or upgrade to OS X.3, there will probably be no problems (except for G3 machines, noted above)

    Problems fixed in Version 11.0.2

      • Tutorial not linking to Web site
      • Predefined Format (tpf) files become corrupt after first use
      • Title and Subtitle run together in the header
      • Installation not completing correctly on select systems
      • Data, Syntax and Output windows switch very slowly
      • File skipped when using INCLUDE
      • Slow performance in Viewer window
      • Syntax execution runs slowly or freezes
      • Cannot open Systat system files
      • Slow performance when creating and editing graphs
      • Syntax files not appearing in Production Facility

Enhancements in 10.0.5 as compared with earlier releases

SPSS has announced the following enhancements in Version 10.0.5 as compared with Version 10.0 (also referred to as 10.0.1):

One of the several enhancements of the 10.0.5 patch is improved performance. This includes significant changes which should affect how you are able to use the software, including:

      • Improved launch speed.
      • When using distributed mode, default caching of data read through the ODBC Wizard in order to speed processing. Users who wish to process data on the server rather than locally can override this setting. In addition, users running single seat installations or running locally may easily change the default to cache the data. This may write a large data file to the user's PC, but may save time querying a database on a network server.
      • Improved speed in the Text Wizard, including the default caching option that has been added to the ODBC Wizard, has been provided both for distributed and local analysis.
      • Reading *. sav files has been optimized and should be much faster than in 10.0.1.
      • Other issues related to processing transformations and caching data have been addressed.

      Other new features include:

      • The GET SAS syntax was implemented which will allow you to import SAS portable files and SAS files up to version 6.12. The documentation for this command is at:

          http://www.spss.com/tech/downloads/getsas.pdf

      • Process capability statistics were added to quality control charts: CP, CpK, CR, CpM, CpU, CpL, K
      • Process performance statistics were added to quality control charts: PP, PpK, PR, PpM, PpU, PpL
      • Enhancements were made to the data editor such as:

        • Drag and drop to change the order of variables
        • Paste variables dialog box

Also, the following changes were made:

      • A problem in which the Text Wizard was unable to read large text files and produced "GET FILE Error 255 1 " was fixed.
      • A bug in which inserting a case after SORT CASES caused a crash was repaired.
      • A problem whereby syntax written in 9.0 produced error messages in 10.0 due to a problem with sorting and filtering not working properly was fixed.
      • A problem of SPSS 10.0 had reading *.sys files created by SPSS/PC+ was repaired.
      • A bug in which changing the temporary directory restricted use of IGRAPHS was fixed.
      • A problem in which changing variable type from string to date was incorrect was corrected.
      • The bug that caused value labels assigned to dates to not appear in the Data Editor was fixed.
      • The problem in which sorting cases did not work on filtered variables was corrected.
      • A problem whereby the Variable View showed invalid types and formats combinations was fixed.
      • A problem in which Multiple Response Table did not run due to long string variables was fixed.
      • A problem in which files could not be saved after importing date fields with Text Wizard or GET DATA TXT command was corrected.
      • A problem whereby the 'Make Default' command button in Page Setup was not enabled was fixed.
      • A bug in the Variable View whereby a space was not allowed as a missing value for a string variable was corrected.
      • A problem whereby variable formats did not reflect formats in GET DATA TXT syntax was fixed.
      • A problem that led to restricted numeric formats not being displayed correctly in the Data Editor was corrected.
      • A problem whereby weights were removed from the active data file after saving data files was fixed.
      • A problem in which COMPUTE statements were limited to 67 arguments was corrected.
      • A transformations data storage problem where the results of a transformation carried over to subsequent cases that did not fit the criteria of a specified condition was corrected.
      • A problem in which copy and pasting pivot tables into Excel produced odd looking numbers was repaired.
      • A problem in which SPSS would not allow a new active data file to be saved under the old data file's name was fixed.
