Setting Up Eudora 5.x
Eudora 5.x will not support SSL, which is required for checking USC email over the USC wireless system and from non-USC Internet connections. If you will be using Eudora on the USC wireless system or from a non-USC connection, we recommend the unsupported SSL version of Eudora 6.2, which can be downloaded from Eudora directly.
What You Will Need
- A connection to the Internet.
- A USC computer account on a host whose accounts are managed by ITS and have been migrated to email.usc.edu.
Configuring Eudora
Before you can use Eudora, you must configure it to access your USC computer account.
- Open Eudora by double-clicking on the Eudora icon or on the Eudora Settings file.
- From the Special menu, select Settings.
- A dialog box will appear with the Getting Started... icon selected.
- In the Username: field, type your login name. This is the name that appears right before the @ symbol in your email address at USC. Type this in all lowercase letters.
- In the Mail Server: field, type email.usc.edu
Note: If your account is on a server that has not been moved to the new mailstore on email.usc.edu, (for example, pollux.usc.edu), enter that hostname instead of email.usc.edu. - In the Real Name: field, type your real name. This will appear in the From: field of your outgoing messages.
- In the SMTP Server: field, enter email.usc.edu.
- In the Return Address: field, you can specify a return email address if you would like replies to your messages to be sent to an email address other than your USC account.
Note: If you are connecting to the Internet with an Internet service provider other than USC, please contact your Internet service provider in order to determine what SMTP host you should be using. If you specify a USC host and you are connecting to the Internet via a third party Internet service provider, you will not be able to send messages since ITS currently does not allow mail relaying. - Click the Checking Mail icon to display the checking mail settings on the right hand side.
- In the Mail Protocol: field, please select the IMAP setting.
- Click on the OK button to save the changes.
Checking for and Receiving Mail
To check for new mail, follow the steps below:

Replying to a Mail Message
For any message, you can easily compose a reply:
- While the mail message window is displayed, click on the Message menu and select Reply.
- A composition window will appear with the sender's address automatically placed in the To: field of the header. The original sender's text will be included in the message. This text may be edited or deleted.

- When you are done typing your message, click on the Send button to send the mail message.

Creating Folders
To create a folder on your home directory (not locally on your machine), simply select your Inbox folder from your IMAP server. Then from the menu bar at the top of the window, click Mailbox, then select New.
A dialog box will appear asking you to input a name for a folder. Enter a name in the text field and click OK. The new folder should be listed below the Inbox along with any folders previously created or added.
Saving Messages
Once you've created any folders, you can save any email messages from your INBOX to any folder you may have previously created. To save a message simply select the message you want to save. Then from the menu bar at the top of the window, click Transfer, then the name of your IMAP server, and then the name of the folder you wish to move the message to. This procedure is ideal for organizing your mail messages as well as keeping your IMAP Inbox utilization below your limit.
