Saving Mail to Local Folders (Mac)
This document details the configuration specific to backing up your emails to a local computer using Eudora (for Mac OS X).
Note: before learning how to save your emails to a local folder on your computer, you first need to first configure your mail to send and receive email from email.usc.edu. For instructions on how to configure Eudora, see the Setting Up Eudora page, available from the Eudora navigation on the right.
To save mail from your inbox or other IMAP folders to Eudora, you will first create a local folder on your computer and then move email to the new folder.
- While in Eudora, select Window from the menu. Click Mailboxes
- The mailboxes under Eudora Folder (In, Out and Trash), are local mailboxes. The mailboxes under Dominant are your IMAP mailboxes. If you do not see the local/IMAP folders, click the arrows to the left of both folders to expand them.
- To create more local mailboxes, select Mailbox from the menu. Click New....
- Type in a name you want to identify the local mailbox with, for example, saved messages. Click OK.
- You will see the local mailbox appear under Eudora Folder.
- Repeat the previous step to create as many local mailboxes as you need.
- Open the IMAP mailbox with the messages you want to move, go the Edit from the menu, click Select ALL. Instead of selecting all, you can choose to select only the messages you want by clicking on those messages while holding down the command key.
- Select Transfer from the menu, then click on the corresponding local mailbox you just created to transfer the messages to this local mailbox. If you want to copy instead of transfer the messages, click and drag those messages with your mouse to your local mailbox while holding down the option key on the keyboard.
- Repeat the above two steps, as necessary.
