Saving Mail to Local Folders with Eudora 5x for Windows
This document details the configuration specific to backing up your email to a local computer using Eudora 5.x for Windows.
Note: before learning how to backup your emails to a local folder on your computer, you need to first set up Eudora to send and receive emails from email.usc.edu. For instructions, see the Setting Up Eudora page, available from the Eudora navigation on the right-hand side of this page.
Eudora 5.x for Windows provides you with a set of default local folders after you set it up to check email using the recommended IMAP method.
These local folders should be located above your IMAP folders. By default, Eudora call this group of local folders "Eudora," while their online counterparts are named "Dominant." In the following example, we will try to move the "sent-mail-nov-2006" mailbox to a local computer:
- Right click Eudora, under which all the local mailboxes are stored, and select New to make a new local folder.
- When prompted to name the new mailbox, type in a name for the folder. In this case, since we are trying to move the Sent-mail-nov-2006 folder to a local location, let's name it Local_sent-mail-nov-2006:
- After giving it a name, click OK.
- Repeat the previous step to create as many local mailboxes as you need.
- You will see the local mailboxes you created under the local folder group Eudora. These are still empty, of course, since you have not moved the messages yet.
- Double-click the IMAP mailbox you want to move from the Dominant group, and select as many messages as you would like by holding down the SHIFT key while clicking the messages. If you want to select all the messages, please click Edit from the menu bar, then choose Select All (shortcut keys: Ctrl+A).
- You can then drag selected messages into the corresponding local folder to make copies of them locally, or if you simply want to transfer these messages offline, after selecting them, you can use the Transfer function from the toolbar. This Transfer function will move the highlighted messages to any of the folders of your choice.
- Repeat the above steps as necessary to move more messages or entire mailboxes.
