Using USC Email Address Lookup with Outlook Express

This document contains directions on how to configure Outlook Express to use USC's LDAP Email lookup server, gds.usc.edu.

Setting Up a New Directory Service

  1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
  2. Click Add and select Directory Service.
  3. For Internet directory (LDAP) server, enter gds.usc.edu and click Next.
  4. Select No in order to not check addresses using the directory service, and click Next .
  5. Click Finish to complete the Internet Connection Wizard.
  6. Highlight the new directory service from the list and click Properties .
  7. Click the Advanced tab.

  8. In the Search base field, enter dc=usc,dc=edu and click OK
  9. Click Close to close the Internet Accounts window.

Adding Users to an Address Book

Users' names and email addresses can easily be added from the LDAP server to a local address book, for use when composing messages.

  1. While in Outlook Express, click Addresses.
  2. In the Address Book window, click Find People button.
  3. In the Find People window, select gds.usc.edu from the Look in: list of directory services.
  4. Enter your search criteria in either the Name or E-mail fields and click Find Now .
    gds2.JPG Any matching results will be displayed at the bottom of the window, otherwise a search failure message will appear.
  5. To add a match to your address book, highlight the record in the results window and press Add to Address Book. Edit the users' properties as necessary, and click OK .

Adding Users to an Email Message

Email addresses can also be directly added to an email message from the LDAP server, without having to add them to an address book first.

  1. In the New Message Composition window, click any recipient header (To:, Cc:, etc.).
  2. To search for users, click Find.
  3. In the Find People window, select gds.usc.edu from the Look in : list of directory services.
  4. Enter your search criteria in Name or E-mail and click Find Now .

  5. Resulting matches, if any, can be added to the appropriate message recipient field by highlighting the match and pressing one of the recipient header buttons (To: ->, Cc: ->, Bcc: ->), as necessary. Results can also be added directly to the Address Book in this window by highlighting a match and clicking Add to Address Book.
