Updating Pine To Use email.usc.edu
Pine is a simple, text-based email application which allows you to send and receive email through your USC computer account. For more information on how to use Pine, please click here.
Configuring Pine for EMAIL.USC.EDU
In an effort to make the migration proccess easier for Pine users, ITS has configured the new settings automatically by generating a new .pinerc file, and saved your old settings in a file called .pinerc_old. If you wish to use the previously customized settings (now saved under.pinerc_old), or if for any reason the appropriate .pinerc was not automatically generated, please be sure to have the following configuration in your .pinerc
To edit this file, you will need to use the text editor pico. Additional information about using pico is available.
Type pico -w .pinerc.
The configuration options in the .pinerc are in the format of option-name=setting
The following options need to be updated:
smtp-server should be set to smtp.usc.edu
inbox-path is so Pine knows where to find your INBOX. It should be set to {email.usc.edu/user=your-username}inbox, where your-username is your USC username
default-fcc tells pine where it should save the copy of all messages you send.
- If it is currently empty, you should set it to {email.usc.edu/user=your-username}sent-mail
- If you have specified another folder to save your sent mail in, you should set it to {email.usc.edu/user=your-username}folder, where folder is the name of the folder you want your sent mail in.
Example:
incoming-folders and folder-collections set where your saved message folders are located, so you can access them. They should be set to {email.usc.edu/user=username}.
Example:
Last, exit pico, by typing Control-X. Pico will prompt you to save your changes.
