Secure Connection (SSL) with Thunderbird

SSL, which stands for Secure Sockets Layer, is an optional security protocol which uses encryption to protect your username, password and messages while they are sent between your computer and our email servers (learn more about SSL). A secure connection is required to send and receive USC email. USC email servers are SSL-compatible, but in order to take advantage of this security measure in Thunderbird, as in most other email programs, you to configure the program to do so.

  1. Select the Tools menu.
  2. Select Account Settings to see following dialog box:

    Incoming SSL Configuration

  3. Click Server Settings
  4. Select the Use Secure Connection option.

  5. Outgoing SSL Configuration

  6. Click Outgoing Server (SMTP)
  7. Select the SSL option under the Use Secure Connection section.
  8. Finally, click OK to finish.

Your incoming and outgoing email are now protected by SSL.
