Setting Up Windows Mail for the USC Network

This document explains how to set up the Microsoft Windows Mail program to get and send email from email.usc.edu. Instructions for setting up Microsoft Outlook to get your USC email can be found on the Setting Up Outlook page.

If you have used Windows Mail on another network and need to change your settings for the USC network, see the Reconfiguring Windows Mail section below.

If you are using Windows Mail for the first time, the Internet Connection Wizard will automatically launch when you click the Windows Mail icon. If the Wizard does not come up, it can be accessed from the Tools menu.

To set up a new account with Windows Mail, follow the steps below:

  1. Select Accounts.

  3. In the Internet Accounts window, click the Add button and select Email Account.
  4. In the Display Name field, enter your full name, and click Next.
  5. In the Email Address field, enter your USC email address, and click Next. Your email address should be in the format username@usc.edu.

  7. For the Incoming Email Server type, select IMAP.
  8. For the Incoming Email Server field, enter email.usc.edu.
  9. For the Outgoing Email Server field, enter email.usc.edu.
    Note: If USC is not your Internet Service Provider (ISP), you will need to enter the SMTP server of the ISP you are using. Please contact your provider for that information.
  10. After supplying the outgoing mail server, click Next.
  11. For the Email username field, enter your login name. This should be the same as the part of your USC email address that comes before the @usc.edu suffix. For example, if your email address were ttrojan@usc.edu, then your username would be ttrojan.
  12. You may choose to save your password in the Password field and click the check box marked Remember password.
    Note: It is recommended that you do not save your password if other people have access to your computer. Saving your password can also make it difficult for you to remember your password, which can lead to other problems.
  13. Click Next and then click Finish to close the Internet Connection Wizard.
  14. In the Internet Accounts window, under the Mail section, select your account and click Properties.

  16. Select the Servers tab.

  18. Make sure you check My server requires authentication under Outgoing Mail Server.
  19. Click the Advanced tab.
  20. Make sure the server port number for Outgoing Mail(SMTP) is set to 587 and the server port for Incoming Mail(IMAP) is set to 993.

  22. Click OK to save the changes, and click Close to exit the Internet Accounts window.

Reconfiguring Windows Mail to Access email.usc.edu


If you have previously configured Windows Mail for another email account, follow the steps below to add your new USC email account to Windows Mail:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
  2. An Internet Account box will appear. Under the Mail section, select your account and click Properties.
  3. Select the Servers tab.

  5. In the Incoming mail (POP or IMAP) field, enter email.usc.edu
  6. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field, enter email.usc.edu
    Note: If USC is not your Internet Service Provider, then you will need to enter the SMTP server of your ISP. If you do not know the name of the server, you will have to contact your ISP for that information.
  7. Supply your outgoing mail server
  8. Make sure you check My server requires authentication under Outgoing Mail Server.
  9. Select the Advanced tab.

  11. Make sure the server port number for Outgoing Mail(SMTP) is set to 587 and the server port for Incoming Mail(IMAP) is set to 993.
  12. Click OK to save the changes, and click Close to exit the Internet Accounts window.
