Saving to Local Folders

Windows Mail, the default email client, or program, for Windows Vista operating system gives you the option to store your email locally on your computer. This allows you to save your email beyond the university's email retention period and reduce the volume of mail that counts toward your USC email quota.

Note: If you have not yet configured Windows Mail to send and receive email, please see the Setting Up Windows Mail page, available through the right-hand navigation on this page.

Saving Email to Your Computer
To move copies of email from the Inbox or other IMAP folders on your email.usc.edu account to a local folder, you first need to create local folders on your computer.

  1. While in Windows Mail, go to the File menu, select New and then click New Folder. The following window will appear.
  2. mail_new_mailbox.gif
  3. Under Folder Name, type in a name for the local folder, for example, mail backup. Click OK.
  4. Click Local Folders to ensure that the folder you create is located on your computer.
  5. Repeat the previous steps to create as many local folders as you need.
  6. You will see the local folders you created in the Folder List on the left-hand side of the window. If you do not see the Folder List, go to the View menu and select Layout. Make sure that Folder List is selected and click Ok.
  7. mail_transfer.gif
  8. Select the IMAP folder from which you would like to move messages, then go to the Edit menu, and click Select All. If you only want to move specific messages, you can choose to select only the messages you want by clicking on those messages while holding down the CONTROL key.
  9. Drag selected message(s) directly to the local folder of your choice in the folder list.
  10. Repeat the above two steps to move other folders.
