Configuring Windows Mobile for USC Wireless and USC Email
The ITS Customer Support Center currently does not support the use of mobile devices.
The following documentation is provided as a courtesy to USC faculty, staff, and students who wish to use their media-capable mobile phones to connect to the USC wireless network or to access their USC email using the services of another wireless provider.
Connecting your Windows Mobile Device to the USC Wireless Network
Before you use your mobile device on the USC Wireless Network, it should be registered for use on the USC network through the ITS Network Registration page. You will need a valid USC user name and password in order to register your device.
To locate the MAC Address of your Windows Mobile device, follow the steps below:
- From the Start Menu of your phone, select Settings.
- From the Connections tab, select Wireless LAN
- The current status of wireless will be displayed. Wireless needs to be on for the MAC address to be displayed. If Wireless LAN is off, press Turn on WLAN.
- Go to the Advanced tab. The MAC address will be displayed next to MAC:.
- On a computer with a working Internet connection, go to the following link: www.usc.edu/etherreg. This site will ask for your USC user name and password. Type your Windows Mobile device's MAC address under the Ethernet Address section. You may leave the Comment field blank.
- Click Register. Your device is now registered to the USC Wireless Network.
- On your mobile device, select OK to return to the Connections tab of Settings.
- Select Wi-Fi. This will display the current wireless networks available to you. If you are close to a USC Wireless access point, you should see USC Wireless. Select USC Wireless and then select Connect. This will connect you to the USC Wireless network.

Setting Up USC Email on a Windows Mobile Device
- Open the Windows Mobile Messaging program. This is normally found in the Start Menu under Programs. The program may be located somewhere else on some devices.
- Open Menu, go to Tools, and then select New Account...
- Enter your email address in the Email address: field. Un-check the option Try to get email settings automatically from the Internet. Select Next.
- Enter your name and the name you would like to give to the account on the device (for example, USC email). Select Next.
- For Incoming mail server, enter email.usc.edu.
- For Account Type, select IMAP4. Select Next.
- Check the option Outgoing server requires authentication. Make sure the option Use the same user name and password for sending email is checked. This will use the same user name and password that you use to receive mail. Select Next.
- Your Windows Mobile device is now configured to receive USC email.
The program will prompt you to select an email provider, select Internet email. Select Next.
Next, enter your USC user name and password. Select Next.
For Outgoing (SMTP) mail server, enter email.usc.edu.
Finally, you will be prompted to select how often you want to automatically Send/Receive. This setting is up to you, but be aware that the more you check your email, the more your Internet connection will be used, which can drain the battery.
Select Finish.
