Network Printing Overview

The pages in this section explain how to set up your computer to print to a shared (networked) printer, such as a departmental or computer lab printer.

In order to send files to a networked printer, you must make sure that both the printer and the computer you are using are connected to the Internet and correctly registered on the USC network.

You will also need to be sure that your computer has the printer driver for the particular printer to which you wish to send files. It is common for computer manufacturers to pre-install multiple printer drivers with the operating system. If you do not find a driver for your printer's make and model already installed on your computer, you should install the driver from the CD-ROM that came with the printer. If you do not have the CD-ROM, you may be able to download the driver from the manufacturer's website.

Registering Printers

If you would like to set up a printer as a shared printer on the USC network, you will need to register the printer and obtain an IP address for it. To do so, please visit www.usc.edu/iprequest.

Please note that ITS does not provide documentation for setting up printers.
