Network Printing (Windows Vista)
The instructions below will help you set up your computer to print to a networked printer, such as a departmental printer or shared printer in a residence hall.
What You Will Need:
- A PC running Windows Vista.
- A printer that has an IP address on the USC Network.
- The IP address of the printer. Most printers will allow you print a test page with this information. If you need help printing a test page, please refer to your printer's instruction manual.
- The printer driver for the printer you are trying to install. Note: Many printer drivers come pre-installed with your operating system. If you do not find a driver for your printer's make and model already installed on your computer, you may need to locate the driver from the CD-ROM that came with the printer. If you do not have the disk, you may be able to obtain the driver from the manufacturer's web site.
Note: Many departmental printers are labeled with their IP address. If the printer you are using is not labeled, please contact your local IT support group for help finding this information.
Configuring Your Computer for Network Printing
- Go to the Start menu, and select the Control Panel icon. If you've changed the Start menu's appearance to the classic interface, select Settings. Click Printer or Printers in the Control Panel.
Click Add Printer.
- Under Choose a local or network printer, click Add a local printer to specify the printer you are adding.
- On the next screen, select the Create a new port radio button, and select Standard TCP/IP Port.
- Click the Next button.
- Under Device type select TCP/IP Device.
Enter the printer's Hostname or IP address in the Hostname or IP address field. Click the Next button to continue.
- If Windows is unable to find an appropriate driver, it will prompt you to locate the printer driver. Choose the manufacturer from the list and look for the driver in the Printer subsection.
- If your printer is not listed, you may need to install the drivers from the CD-ROM or floppy disk that came with the printer. If you do not have the CD-ROM, you may be able to download the latest drivers from your printer manufacturer's web site. Once you have downloaded drivers for your printer, click the Have Disk button. You will be prompted to specify the location of the drivers. Browse the CD-ROM or directory into which you have downloaded your drivers.
- Click the Next button to continue.
- The next window asks if you want to keep the existing driver or use the new one. If you would like to keep the current driver, or if you are not sure, select Keep existing driver. If you wish to update or replace the driver, select Replace existing driver.
- The next window asks you for the printer's name. The default name is the printer model you selected. You may want to rename your printer.
- Below the printer's name, you will see the option to make the current printer the default printer. Check the box if you would like this printer to be your default printer.
- Click Next to continue.
- The next section will confirm the addition of the printer. You should print a test page to make sure that the printer is set up correctly.
- After making sure the test page printed successfully, click Finish to add the printer.Your computer is now configured to print to this network printer.
