Network Printing (Windows 2000)
The instructions below will help you set up your computer to print to a networked printer, such as a departmental printer or shared printer in a residence hall.
What You Will Need:
- A PC running Windows 2000 with UNIX Print Services installed.
- A printer that has an IP address on the USC Network.
- The IP address of the printer. Most printers will allow you print a test page with this information. If you need help printing a test page, please refer to your printer's instruction manual.
- The printer driver for the printer you are trying to install.
- Double-click the My Computer icon.
- In the My Computer window, click Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel window, click Add/Remove Programs.
- In the Add/Remove Programs window, select Add/Remove Windows Component.
- Browse through the list of components to make sure that Other Network File and Print Services is checked. Select it and click Details.
- Make sure that Print Services for Unix is checked.
- Click OK.
- Click Next.
- If asked for your Windows 2000 CD-ROM, insert the CD-ROM and follow the instructions.
- Click Finish.
- From the Start menu select Settings and then Printers.
- Double-click the Add Printer icon.
- The Add Printer Wizard window appears. Click Next.
- Local Printer should be selected. Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer should be left unchecked.
- Click Next.
- In the window that appears, select the Create a new port option. For the Type of port, select LPR Port from the drop-down menu.
- Click Next.
- In the window that appears, enter the IP address of the printer in the Name or address of server providing lpd field.
Click OK.
Select the manufacturer of your printer from the list of Manufacturers and the printer model from the list of Printers.
- Click Next.
Note: If your printer is not listed, you may need to install the drivers from the CD-ROM or floppy disk that came with the printer. If you do not have the CD-ROM, you may be able to download the latest drivers from your printer manufacturer's web site. Once you have downloaded drivers for your printer, click the Have Disk button. You will be prompted to specify the location of the drivers. Browse the CD-ROM or directory into which you have downloaded your drivers.
- In the next window that appears, enter a name for the printer and choose whether you would like to set this printer as your default printer.
- Click Next.
- Leave the option Do not share this printer selected and click Next.
- You will be prompted to print a test page. Click Next and then click Finish.
- After making sure that the test page printed successfully, click OK.
Note: Many departmental printers are labeled with their IP address. If the printer you are using is not labeled, please contact your local IT support group for help finding this information.
Note: Many printer drivers come pre-installed with your operating system. If you do not find a driver for your printer's make and model already installed on your computer, you may need to locate the driver from the CD-ROM that came with the printer. If you do not have the disk, you may be able to obtain the driver from the manufacturer's web site.
