Symantec Antivirus (Windows)

Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) Corporate Edition (CE) 10.1 is designed to detect, remove, and prevent the spread of viruses. This page will show you how to install and update the software.

System Requirements for SAV CE 10.1

  • An IBM-compatible PC running Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003 or Windows Vista.

  • Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.1 can be found on the software download page.

On-Campus and Off-Campus Clients

ITS provides two downloadable versions of Symantec Antivirus: 1) the on-campus client, or version, and 2) the off-campus client, or version. Choose the on-campus version if your computer is constantly connected to the network and is never powered off. Choose the off-campus version if your computer is not constantly connected to the USC network and is powered off regularly. Below, you will find a comparison of the two versions.

  • On-Campus Version or Client: Virus definition updates occur at 60-minute intervals from the on-campus virus definition server. Continuous updates occur from liveupdate.symantec.com.
(For maximum security, we push rapid-release definitions to the campus client.)
  • Off-Campus Version or Client LiveUpdate with liveupdate.symantec.com is scheduled to download definitions daily from Symantec at a random time between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

The LiveUpdate feature is now enabled on both versions of SAV 10.1. Use LiveUpdate to obtain virus definitions and program updates.

There is also a Campus Client x64, which is a special version of the client that only works on 64-bit versions of Windows (except for Windows 64 for Itanium).

Installation (for both clients)

  1. After downloading the Symantec AntiVirus 10.1 Client installation file, double-click the file (SAV101MP6CC.exe for campus users, or SAV101MP6OCC.exe for off-campus users) to begin the installation process.

Note: The installer will automatically uninstall Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.1 or 9.0 if either earlier version is detected. You should uninstall other antivirus software before you begin the installation process.

  2. The InstallShield Wizard will display and begin the installation process.

Updating Virus Definitions Using LiveUpdate

Both clients run virus definition updates automatically. Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.1 also allows you to manually check for virus definitions and program updates at any time. You can do this on campus or from home.

  1. From the File menu in the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, select LiveUpdate, or click the LiveUpdate button.
