Symantec Client Security Version 3.1 (Windows Firewall)
Symantec Client Security includes antivirus and firewall programs that protect your computer against viruses and unwanted network intrusions, including Trojans, worms, spyware, and pop-up windows.
System Requirements
- Windows ME, 2000, or XP
- 42MB or more of disk space on your local hard drive
- Symantec Client Security version 3.1 from USC's software download page
Installing the Correct Version
ITS provides two versions of Symantec Client Security. Choose the on-campus version if your computer is constantly connected to the network and is never powered off. Choose the off-campus version if your computer is not constantly connected to the USC network and is powered off regularly.
On-Campus Client
- Virus definitions are automatically and regularly updated through a constant connection to ITS's virus definition server.
- New firewall definitions should be downloaded from Symantec using LiveUpdate.
Off-Campus Client
- New virus and firewall definitions should be downloaded from Symantec using LiveUpdate.
Pre-Installation Recommendations
When you install the Symantec firewall, the built-in Windows XP firewall will be automatically disabled. ITS recommends that you uninstall all other firewall programs, and all antivirus programs on your computer before installing Symantec Client Security.
Installing Symantec Client Security over previously installed versions of Norton or Symantec antivirus or firewall programs (other than the Windows XP firewall) could cause software to fail, and may require you to reinstall Windows. If you would like further information on how to uninstall your previously installed Norton or Symantec program, see Symantec's Support Site and search for your program.
Note: ITS does not support altering the default configuration of Symantec Client Security.
Installing the Symantec Firewall Program
- Download the appropriate on-campus or off-campus Symantec Client Security 3.1 software from USC's software download page.
- Double-click the file to begin the installation process. For the off-campus installation file, double-click the SCS31MP6OCC.exe file. For the on-campus installation file, double-click the SCS31MP6CC.exe. The Welcome to Symantec Client Security screen will display.
- Click Next. The Symantec Client Security Install Shield Wizard displays.
- Click Next. The Symantec License Agreement will display. Read the agreement, accept the terms of the license, and click Next to continue.
- The Setup Type dialog will display. Select Complete and click Next to continue.
- Click Install. The wizard installs Symantec Client Security.
- Click Finish to complete the installation.
- In the LiveUpdate dialog, Click the Next button to begin LiveUpdate. After LiveUpdate completes, you will be given a list of updated components.
- Click the Finish button to complete LiveUpdate. Restart your computer.
You will be prompted to run LiveUpdate, which will install client updates as well as virus and firewall definition updates. ITS recommends that you install these updates.
After you restart your computer, both the Symantec firewall and the antivirus icons will appear in the task bar. ITS has pre-configured Symantec Client Security to automatically block several problematic ports, and to automatically open only those ports necessary for daily computer use. For a list of open and blocked ports, please see the configuration details section of the Firewall FAQ page.
Updating Virus and Firewall Definitions Using LiveUpdate
You should keep your virus and firewall definitions up-to-date to protect the security of your information. Once automatic updates have been enabled, Symantec Client Security 3.1 will allow you to check for new definitions and program updates.
- From the Start menu, click All Programs, Symantec Client Security, and then Symantec Client Firewall.
- From the Symantec Client Firewall window, click the LiveUpdate tab.
- The Welcome to LiveUpdate window will display a list of Symantec products and components installed on your computer. Click Next.
- A window will appear informing you that the download has completed. Click Finish. Symantec Client Security will proceed to update definitions.
