Symantec Antivirus Scans (Windows)

This page will show you how to run Symantec Antivirus to scan your computer for viruses and worms.

Scanning for Viruses and Worms
  1. In the Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition window, click the Scan menu and select the type of scan you want to do. A Full Scan is recommended if you suspect your computer might have a virus or worm.

If you selected a Custom Scan, select the drive(s) and folders that you want Symantec AntiVirus to scan, and click Scan to begin the scan. (On most computers, the files stored on Local Disk (C:) are most likely to be infected.)

  3. If a virus is detected, the name of the virus will be displayed in the Symantec AntiVirus Notification window, and in the Keep a Record Area in the Histories section.

  5. Take note of the action taken by Symantec for each virus/threat. The action should never be Left alone unless the risk type is a compressed file, and the virus inside the compressed file was removed on another line. The action should always be Cleaned or Quarantined.

  6. If the action taken is Left alone, or you received an error that the virus could not be cleaned or quarantined, the virus is still on the computer. You will need to reboot the computer in Safe Mode and run the scan again to successfully remove the virus.

Creating a Scheduled Scan
  1. Click the Start menu, go to Programs, select Symantec Client Security, and click Symantec Antivirus.

  3. In the Symantec AntiVirus window, expand Scheduled Scans, and select New Scheduled Scan. On the right side, select the type of scan you want to schedule. It is a good idea to perform a full scan on a regular basis.
