TEL Experiments

Spring 2008 TEL Experiments

The TEL Experiments allows USC faculty members to test out new technologies. The purpose of the experiments is two-fold: to give faculty members the chance to experiment with technology and to provide feedback about which technologies are most helpful in a variety of teaching situations. The experiments are meant to be dispersed among a sampling of faculty from across the University to allow for a broad range of experimentation.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for selection, candidates must be faculty at USC who are interested in incorporating, audio podcasting, clickers or mobile briefcase technology into their teaching paradigm. Interested faculty members must follow the criteria for selection listed on the application. This Experiment is only open to USC faculty members.

Selection Process:

The final award decision will be made by theTechnology Enhanced Learning Faculty Advisory Committee and recipients will be notified on or before November 20, 2007.

Spring 2008 Experiments:

Faculty are encouraged to apply for one of the following three experiments:

Submission Information:

The submission deadline for Spring 2008 applications was November 5, 2007. If you are still interested in applying, please email teldl@usc.edu for information.

Application Requirements:

The following will be required of all applicants:

  • Applicants are required to submit a completed TEL Experiment application.

  • Upon request, applicants may be asked to submit a syllabus(i) (draft is acceptable) for the course(s) in which technology will be used.

Additional requirements:

  • Recipients must attend a training session for their equipment. One-hour training sessions for Spring 2008 applicants will be held 12/9/07-12/10/07 and 1/9/08-1/10/08. Your equipment will be checked out to you at this session. (Returning users are also required to attend.)

  • Recipients are required to complete reports 10 days after the end of the semester. These reports will include a brief summary of how the technology was used, how frequently it was used, teaching techniques, challenges, and future plans. To be considered for continuations or future experiments, this report must be completed.

  • Recipients agree to allow TEL team to conduct two scheduled in class observations and two polls of their students during the semester.

  • Recipients must attend at least one TEL Faculty Forum in the Spring semester.

Criteria for Award:

The following guidelines will be used when selecting the recipients for the experiment:

  • How significantly will technology/equipment be incorporated into the course? (Clarity of the proposal and the type and frequency of technology use will be considered.)

  • What will be the pedagogical impact of the technology? (i.e. How the use of technology is expected to improve student comprehension of course material.)

  • Previous experience with technology-enhanced learning or distance learning is preferred, but not required.

Disclosure:

To give the greatest number of faculty the opportunity to experiment, equipment is checked out on a per semester basis. Faculty members may request a second semester, subject to evaluation by the Technology Enhanced Learning Faculty Advisory Committee.

(Faculty who are interested in using these technologies after their experiment period are encouraged to contact their Dean or department chair to identify matching funding for the purchase of this equipment. Interested faculty members may also contact the TEL Ambassador for their school for help in facilitating this process.)
