Information about Using Windows Vista at USC

Updated: April 14, 2008

Important Alert about Non-compatible Software:

Please be advised that many common software programs might not be Vista-compatible. ITS is working to identify programs that might cause problems for USC users. More information will be posted here as it becomes available.

Cisco VPN compatibility with Windows Vista

The Cisco VPN Client 5.0.02.0090 for Windows Vista does NOT support the following:

  • Systems upgraded from Windows XP to Vista (A clean OS installation is required)
  • 64-bit support
  • Integrated firewall
  • InstallShield

ITS provides limited support for the Cisco VPN 5.0.02.0090 client.

General Information about Configuration and Upgrading

If you already have the new Vista operating system and wish to connect to the USC network, ITS recommends that Vista be configured for the Office Mode, not the Home Mode. This configuration setting holds true for all versions of Vista.

Important Note: If you are connected to the USC network and receive a prompt from Vista asking whether you want to display the network map, clicking the Yes button will cause you to be immediately disconnected from the USC network. Do not request to see the network map when you are connected to the USC network.

If you are unsure about whether or not you should upgrade to Windows Vista at this time, please be advised that not all PCs are capable of running Vista. Microsoft has published technical requirements for Windows Vista-capable PCs and Vista Premium-Ready PCs. See the Windows Vista website for details about these designations.

Additional product information may be found on the Microsoft Windows Vista website.
