Configuring the Cisco VPN 5000 Client (Mac OS 8.x-9.x)

The Cisco Systems VPN Client is a networking software package that allows users who are not on the USC Network to access restricted electronic resources, and also allows wireless users to gain internet access by granting a USC-based IP address over an existing network connection.

The VPN client works over a previously established internet connection. For users of electronic resources, this will generally be a DSL, cable, or dialup connection through a non-USC ISP. For wireless users, you must have already obtained an internal IP address from a wireless access point, starting with 10.100.

Before proceeding, please note that the Cisco Systems VPN Client is currently not supported by ITS.

What You Will Need

  • USC username and password
  • A Mac OS computer equipped with PowerPC CPU.
  • Operating System 8.6 - 9.x
  • Open Transport 1.1.1 or higher.
  • A utility for decoding binhex files. One such utility, Aladdin Expander, is available for download from ITS's Software Download page.
