ITS Web Hosting Services

ITS provides resources for publishing information on the web. There is no charge for using these servers, but you will need to apply for a website maintainer account for departmental and organizational sites.

  • University Departments and Faculty/Staff Organizations
Access to USC's primary web server (www.usc.edu, also known as CWIS) is available to departments and faculty/staff organizations through departmental authorized signers. These accounts are for web publishing for academic, research, administrative and service units, university-affiliated faculty/staff organizations and professional organizations with a USC website maintainer.

  • Recognized Student Organizations
Student organizations can request a computer account for creating web pages and organizational email. Account requests are handled through the Student Activities Office.

  • Personal Faculty and Staff Web Pages
All ITS computer accounts allow the account owner to create a personal web page.

  • Personal Student Web Pages
All ITS computer accounts allow the account owner to create a personal web page.

Private Servers

Some campus units choose to run their own web servers. To obtain a publishing account on a private server, you should contact the server administrator.

URL Options

There are several options for obtaining a more meaningful or easy-to-remember URL for your site:

  • Server Redirects provide sites located on www.usc.edu with shortened URLs. For example, http://www.usc.edu/schools/xxx can be shorted to http://www.usc.edu/xxx through the use of a redirect.

  • Virtual Hosting allows sites located on www.usc.edu to appear as though they were located on a separate server. For example, a site located at http://www.usc.edu/projects/xxx could be virtually hosted at xxx.usc.edu.

  • Private server names can be assigned during the host registration process as long as they conform to the standard USC format, i.e., 'xxx.usc.edu.'

  • Virtual hosts and private server names are expected to conform to the standard USC format. Using a non-standard domain name requires prior approval.
